All Saints Anglican Church - Northern Wairoa

While I was in Dargaville yesterday I popped up a side road of the highway to take photos of this little church in Mititai along the Northern Wairoa river.

Does anyone know any history about it?

This historic church, All Saints, Mititai is registered by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as historic place #425, being a place of historical and cultural significance. It is also listed in the schedule of heritage places in the District Plan of the Kaipara District Council.

The church has a fascinating history, originating with its building in 1882 in the now almost vanished mill-town of Aratapu, and its relocation across the river in 1922 to Mititai. Its significance to the community it serves is apparent from the effort that has been put into its care and maintenance, and the obvious affection with which it is regarded.

The church and its community has undertaken a well considered programme of work, beginning with a condition report prepared in 2004 which indicated that it had reached a state where routine maintenance was no longer sufficient, and it needed to be made structurally sound and watertight again, for its ongoing preservation. This work has progressed well, so the church is in a much sounder state than it was in 2004.
